Week 4 EOC: Tom Hanks BIG
Every step in selling, advertising, and marketing starts with some sort of marketing research. In this movie there's a lot of steps that were missed. Here's a little about the story:
In the movie Big is about a kid (in an adult body) that works on product development for a toy company were they do a marketing research about how the toys are doing in the business. From a marketing research aspect, there is a big toy company were they had success in all what they do. The problem is that when you look at the movie you can see that they are not doing the necessary research they need to satisfy the customer.
For example, there is one part of the scene where the president or head of the department of children's toys shows up, he elaborates that the company doesn't really need to do any research because the toys are selling out so well. Upon his decision he wants to change the toys image or at least tweak it a little bit. The only problem is what if the kids don't like those new gadgets and toys? They may like the original product, but what if they don't want that to change? I thought that could have been handled in a more rational way instead of thinking "I can do this", or "I can do that" attitude. His intentions may be good for the company, but when it comes down to changing a product or anything else, the consumer is the one who makes the final decision (which are the kids in this situation).
It's a fun little comedy, but it also has a seriousness to it as well. Portraying that change happens when we start growing, and how adaptable we can be no matter how much we like it or hate it. In the end you can always change it.
Week 4 BOC: Beautiful Stranger TV
It seems to me that beautiful strangers is a site where professionals in the industry give advice/beauty tips to readers. Although this may be another blog this blog/site is different from a lot I have seen out there. What makes this site special is that it was created by a group of designers, stylists, fashionistas, photographer, graphic designers and much more. They only have one thing that they're set out to do, which is take random strangers from the streets (usually the fashionable and professional) and conduct research. For example, they would gather what information or tips the stranger has and use that within their website, they also try to find out where the stranger got his/her articles of clothing from. Then they incorporate that by using the websites of designers that the stranger talked about getting his/her clothing from. Overall this is a very useful site, if you're looking to go into being a blogger with dreams of fashion and photographer with being sociable in the mix, this is where it starts.
"BeautifulStranger.TV is a style hub featuring the most fabulous looks from the street (and occasionally backstage at fashion shows). The compelling content, which is raw, edgy and fun, totally unscripted and completely authentic, drives the consumer to shop the looks right off the backs of the best dressed."
BeautifulStranger was created by an Editor and Executive Producer whose combined credits over the past 25 years include: Women's Wear Daily, Real Simple, Glamour and W magazines, Showtime Networks, Inc., Nederlander Television and Film among others.
"Beautiful Stranger style sleuths do their stalking in the most happening 'hoods (in the most fashionable cities)."

Week 3 EOC: 9 to 5
The movie “9 to 5” is a classic comedy about three secretaries kill their boss. The producers of the movie got the idea for the film from an article they ready about how someone tried to kill their boss. The movie became very popular during its time because everyone seemed to be able to relate to the movie in someway. Although the movie is shown as a comedy it really is the way that most women felt when working in the business world surrounded by so many egotistical men. It was right around this time that women were making their way into the work force, positioning themselves in jobs more than just desk receptionists. This movie pushed the envelope and helped get the whole concept out there and moving. The movie created quite the movement.
What many people don’t know is the makers of the movie did actual market research to see if secretaries really felt this way about their bosses. The results they acquired were quite shocking. By conducting some simple applied research they gathered realistic information from real-life secretaries. Applied research is the type of research that you must conduct. The type of applied research they conducted I would say would have had to have been exploratory research. This would include qualitative research, in-depth interviews, and observations. This type of research helps clarify research in certain types of environments. The producers never came out and told us what they did to gather the exploratory research, but they did mention that they spoke to actual female secretaries about their views on their bosses. They could have simply done this by conducting a focus group. A focus group is where a group of people discuss their attitudes toward a product, idea, etc. This can be in an interactive setting or there can be a moderator helping the group to move along.
Some of the issues were that there were three secretaries who worked for a slim ball boss. The movie is a very feminist movie that deals with how women of this time dealt with the unethical issues of the workplace. Dolly Parton’s character deals with sexual harassment from the boss even though she clearly states that she is a married woman, and he makes it noted that he too is married but just doesn’t care at all.
There were many ethical dilemmas referenced in the movie. These included killing your boss, office affairs, and sexism. Although these are very serious ethical dilemmas they film got around them by playing them off as jokes.

Week 2 EOC: Survey and Results
I found this and I thought it was interesting how the statistics and facts came about when coming to certain things. For example, 78.1% used social media apps. "Social media apps were the most popular apps used by the women who responded to the survey (78.1 percent)" This is more inclined to kids of the younger generation and perhaps older generation, maybe even women? Women who tend to use social media apps are for fun, or maybe even stalking the person. Although they could use them for playing games and catching up with old friends, and even spying on their kids. Weather was the app used the most after social media, with 75%, which makes sense, most women need to know how to dress based on the weather. "Weather apps were the second most popular over all (75 percent), followed by news (60.9 percent)". It was the most preferred app for women between the ages of 45 and 64.Other than that men don't really care for the most part. Shopping came in 4th out of 9, Which is weird seeing as how women love and I mean LOVE to shop, it's in nature to get the latest trend but seeing as it's 4th out of 9 makes sense because women have more stuff to worry about. "Of those responding, 60.5 percent own a smartphone. And, of those, 4.2 percent use it just for business"

Week 2 BOC: Booty Pop
1.What is a booty pop, and what is its significance?
2.Who spends more $$$ online, men or women? Proportion? (%, $)
Men tend to spend to spend more on random things. “The survey of 6,250 web shoppers found that men expected to spend an average of $326 versus $284 for women, America Online Inc. said. On a monthly basis, men spend an average of $204, compared with $186 for women.” (http://www.opentechsupport.net/forum/general-news/30799-men-spend-more-than-woman-online.html) It is a fact that most men do hate shopping, only because they have to get up and go to the mall. The problem is what kind of man goes to the mall these days? They usually just have their wives or girlfriends shop for them.
3. Who spends more time online, men or women?
Men spend more time on the web because there are more variety for them to buy. “Men research or browse online an average of 31 times a month versus 22 times for women" (http://www.opentechsupport.net/forum/general-news/30799-men-spend-more-than-woman-online.html) So men do spend more online. Not because they are shopping, but because they have more access to internet when they're at home lounging around, or at work, or playing video games.
4. What advantage do marketers have for women shopping online than men?
Women tend to be spontaneous and buy more, when men don't really care for anything. They just seem to think that it is something that's not useful to them at all. Researches have more dependability on women because they're more likely to answer research questions because they want more from the store or help from their purchase.
Week 1 EOC: Expectations
When I think about marketing research I automatically think
about people asking you unrelated questions, and following you around until you
actually say something, or actually take their survey. Marketing research is
more than that because without marketing research we wouldn’t have the things
we do now, or the latest technology, latest clothes and etc. My expectations
for the class is that I will learn about how to research in a different way
where I will not survey the consumer traditional but in a way where it seems
more beneficial to them as well. In the long run I think this type of technique
would be very helpful in making a company grow. That’s what I am expecting.
